Every November, Maine Children's Trust engages in public awareness activities for this campaign to educate parents, providers and community members about
the Period of PURPLE Crying, an abusive head trauma prevention effort.
In the Period of PURPLE Crying, the letters in PURPLE stand for:
- Peak Crying: A baby may cry more each week, the most in month two, then less in months three through five
- Unexpected: Crying and come and go, without a specific reason
- Resists Soothing: A baby may not stop crying, no matter what the parent or caregiver tries
- Pain-Like Face: A crying baby may look like they are in pain, even when they are not
- Long Lasting: Crying can last as much as five hours a day, or more
- Evening: A baby may cry more in the late afternoon and evening
Many organizations and knitters across Maine participate in the Click for Babies Campaign, helping to spread the word about the Period of PURPLE Crying. By crafting purple hats and booties, you can bring warmth and support to community baby showers, educational classes, events, and more! Your knitting will make a difference in these precious early days of life. If you have questions about this period, would like to learn more, or have other parenting questions, please contact
a local Maine Prevention Council who is here to help!
